Solo South America
Born in Buenos Aires and raised in Lima, Tim had not been back to South America since he turned 17. These blog posts are about his solo return journey round Argentina, Chile, Bolivia and Peru, to celebrate his 50th and to take stock of his life so far. If you’d prefer just to see a selection of images from this epic journey and avoid his thoughts, best go to the four ‘Journey with Myself’ galleries in the Portfolio section.
Sony A7RII : f8@400th : ISO 320 : EV -0.7 : FE 90mm f/2.8 This is another photo from my enjoyable and rewarding wanderings round Mendoza in Argentina. As I was walking through the park, I noticed the organic curves of the trees’ foliage acting as an interesting counterpoint to the straight lines of the building in the background. I liked the amount of detail that was visible throughout the image but was concerned about the dynamic range required. There […]
Sony A7RII : f/5@250th : ISO 640 : EV +0.7 : FE 55mm f/1.8 There are times when you are walking around with a camera and you just can’t seem to find something worthwhile to shoot. Over time, I’ve come to realise that the problem is more to do with my mind’s eye not having clicked into focus yet than there actually not being anything out there to capture. It’s not always about the big picture and it takes a mental effort to […]
Sony A7RII : f/3.5@400th : ISO 500 : EV -0.3 : FE 90mm f/2.8 If you’re going to add a little something special to your store front when the shutters are down, then a portrait of the great Jim Morrison seems like an excellent choice. The Doors where a very important band to me in my mind-forming mid-teens and I still get a rebellious twitch when I hear their music now. It reminds me of another one of my strolls a few […]
Sony A7RII : f/9@2000th : ISO 4000 : EV -1.3 : FE 55mm f/1.8 No, it isn’t raining, it’s just the sprinkler system coming on unexpectedly to provide a much needed flower shower, adding another element to the series of images I was gathering with the Sony FE 90mm Macro lens. The gardeners enjoyed my panicked retreat and I was thankful for the weather-proofing on the Sony system. A quick flick of the switch out of macro mode, (I’m not […]
Continuing on from where I left off with the previous PotD and how much I was enjoying using the Sony FE 90mm Macro lens, here’s another offering of a close-up of a rose, this time focusing in on some lovely pink petals and their beautiful curves. All that’s missing is a little bit of morning dew on the tips,… sigh. Again, this is a handheld shot and I must repeat that having such quick access to manual focus on the […]
Sony A7RII : f4@1000th : ISO 640 : EV -1.3 : FE 90mm f/2.8 It’s time to talk a little about the Sony FE 90mm Macro G OSS lens. Macro work is not something I do much of in my regular work environment so I was keen to take it out in the field and put it through its paces. With this in mind, I spent a morning walking around a park in Mendoza, Argentina, with my A7R2, photographing flowers. […]
Sony A7RII : f/6.3@400th : ISO 5000 : EV -0.3 : FE 90mm f/2.8 I made a pretentious statement to someone the other day along the lines that photography is finding the balance between colour and light. On a technical level, it is true that the information in a digital file contains a numerical value of chroma and luminance, but that’s not really what I meant. This abstract image is a case in point. Looking at the tree from a distance, […]
I took this shot walking around the streets of Mendoza in Argentina. I like this picture a lot. A hard black fence, to keep things either in or out, and a single vibrant young bougainvillea shoot popping through, just catching the sun. It doesn’t take a lot of thought to give it some sort of existential twist, about life, boundaries, reaching out, beauty in the small details… It puts a smile on my face just looking at the photo again […]
