Solo South America

Born in Buenos Aires and raised in Lima, Tim had not been back to South America since he turned 17. These blog posts are about his solo return journey round Argentina, Chile, Bolivia and Peru, to celebrate his 50th and to take stock of his life so far. If you’d prefer just to see a selection of images from this epic journey and avoid his thoughts, best go to the four ‘Journey with Myself’ galleries in the Portfolio section.

Tupiza

Tupiza as a starting point

Tupiza may not be the most happening town, nor the most obvious starting place for a tour to the Salar de Uyuni (that would be the actual town of Uyuni), but I had met enough people on my travels who said that Tupiza was the place to go to if you wanted a more pleasant experience. Apparently, the attitude from the majority of tour operators in Uyuni leaves a lot to be desired and Tupiza has not yet developed that weary hard edge […]

PotD: Down to Basics, Light and Colour

Sony A7RII : f/6.3@100th : ISO 2000 : EV -0.7 : FE 55mm f/1.8 Here’s another one of those images that I find it hard to explain why they give me so much satisfaction. I think it’s something to do with getting down to the basics of light and colour. It’s part of the same session as the previous two potd’s, at the local market in Tupiza, Bolivia. I’d noticed the interesting colours in the market’s alleyways coming from the daylight filtering through […]

PotD: Tupiza market II

Sony A7RII : f/6.3@125th : ISO 2000 : EV -0.7 : FE 55mm f/1.8 Here’s another one from the collection of images I shot early one morning at the local market in Tupiza, Bolivia. This time I think it’d be interesting to see the image as if it were SOOC, before I made any of the adjustments in Capture One.

PotD: Tupiza Market I

Sony A7RII : f/7.1@50th : ISO 2500 : EV -0.7 : FE 55mm f/1.8 Markets the world over get going at first light and I like to get to them as the stall holders are setting up for the day, before the crowds arrive and disturb the peace. With the combination of the sun being barely up as well as the narrow covered alleyways, there wasn’t much light about when I got to Tupiza market in Bolivia. Some areas had daylight spilling […]

Pavement Detail

Salta stop-over

Salta was my last stop in Argentina before continuing my northwards journey into Bolivia. The featured image above is a close-up detail of a pavement; like Salta, there may be a few cracks around the edges but that does not diminish the beauty at its colonial heart. I only spent two nights here and enjoyed my walks around the town, with Plaza 9 de Julio as its touristy centre and Av. San Martín as its more local based hub. Balcarce seems to be the go-to street for […]

PotD: A Brick Wall, Advertising and Space

Sony A7RII : f/7.1@320th : ISO 800 : EV -0.3 : FE 90mm f/2.8 There’s nothing quite like the texture of a well-worn brick wall to get the attention of a wandering photographer and the advertising on it just makes the commercial side of me appreciate it even more. This wall was way back off the street, at the end of a large parking space, and I loved how the black awnings added that extra graphic element to the scene. Something I’ve noticed in the cities […]

PotD: The Day-Glo Cheshire Cat

Sony A7RII : f/8@100th : ISO 1600 : EV -0.3 : FE 35mm f/1.4 I came across this indoor funfair and the grinning Cheshire cat whilst strolling down Av. San Martín in Salta, Argentina. It was the middle of the day, the sun was beating down on my pale skin and I was thankful to find some temporary refuge. As my eyes adjusted to the dimly lit space, my senses were assaulted by the intensity of all that colour, the […]

Photo of the Day: RGB and Y, with Tungsten option

Sony A7RII : f/5.6@250th : ISO 2500 : EV -0.3 : FE 90mm f/2.8 I like playing with words but, sometimes, finding a title for a PotD can be tricky. I almost went for my first ‘Untitled’ but finally settled on ‘RGB and Y…’, more out of stubbornness than conviction. I’d noticed this hedge just off Av. Belgrano in Salta many times on my way to and from my accommodation and the city centre but had shied away from stopping because of the security […]
