Colours of Ukraine

Two Balloons

Fuji X100S : f/5.6@250th : ISO 1250  Another recently rediscovered image from the back catalogue that has added resonance now with the war in Ukraine. Living in Finland for the last twenty years, with Russia as a neighbour, it is hard to comprehend that it has come to this. For me, this image of balloons in the colours of Ukraine conveys hope, despite all the sadness.

Pink Hearts in the Bedroom

Fuji X100S : f/4@60th : ISO 1600  One of the joys of finally getting my master catalogue organised is coming across images that, for one reason or another, have never seen the light of day. This one here is a prime example and I don’t know whether it is that my tastes have changed or whether it’s just that I didn’t have a platform set up previously to show this kind of work. Whatever it is, I’m loving the light, […]

London, I Love You

Fuji X100S : f/11@250th : ISO 640  Just booked my ticket back to London, so I thought this shot from 2015 sums up my excitement, with the words ‘I Love You’ graffitied loud and proud on the side of a building. The spot is actually round the back of Mount Pleasant Post Office in Farringdon, a couple of streets away from where my mum lives, so I walked passed this plaintive cry many times. Mount Pleasant has been a huge […]

Reality Check

Fuji X100S : f/2.8@320th : ISO 200 : EV 0.0  An early morning walk into town, before the sun has had time to burn off the condensation on Musiikkitalo’s glass facade, has me coming face to face with a bird in flight’s sudden reality check. The ephemeral beauty of the imprint leads to thoughts on the transitory nature of existence, the fine line separating one breath from the next, hoping that this particular moment is just a temporary shift in […]

Circles of Life

Fuji X100S : f/4@60th : ISO 1000 : EV 0.0  One good thing that has come out of the pandemic is having had more than enough spare time on my hands to go through all my personal work and finally organise the thousands of images into a master catalogue. I can’t say I enjoyed the endless hours, months, sifting through old files, adding all those keywords to the selected images, importing them into the catalogue, but at least I am […]

This Sceptred isle

Sony A7R3 : f/6.3@160th : ISO 320 : EV -0.3 : FE 24-105mm f/4 (38mm) “This royal throne of kings, this sceptred isle, This earth of majesty, this seat of Mars, This other Eden, demi-paradise, This fortress built by Nature for herself Against infection and the hand of war, This happy breed of men, this little world, This precious stone set in the silver sea, Which serves it in the office of a wall, Or as a moat defensive to […]

Hanging out at Portobello Market

Sony A7R3 : f/5.6@640th : ISO 160 : EV -0.7 : FE 24-105mm f/4 (58mm) Continuing on with my Portobello market theme from last summer… I just had to go back to ask these two gentlemen if I could take their portrait and they couldn’t have been friendlier. Ended up chatting about the street photographer Norman McCaskill, who had taken many photos in and around Portobello market in the 1950’s. One of their friends, who was just out of shot […]

Lady with dog at Portobello Market

Sony A7R3 : f/4.5@80th : ISO 100 : EV 0.0 : FE 24-105mm f/4 (77mm) Continuing on with my Portobello market theme… I’ve passed this lady many times over the years and finally I plucked up the courage to ask her if I could take her portrait. I’m sure I wasn’t the first and won’t be the last; she has quite the look and I’m really pleased with how it turned out. Even the dog had his pose all worked […]

Stall Holder at Portobello Market

Sony A7R3 : f/5@250th : ISO 1000 : EV 0.0 : FE 24-105mm f/4 (59mm) Portobello market and the surrounding area has been part of my London life since I first moved here in my late teens and lived in a grotty flat overlooking Notting Hill Gate back in the 80’s. It has always been different from the rest of the city and some of my more formative memories have been around here. Coming back after twenty years living in […]

PotD: Love is in the ‘air…

Sony A7R3 : f/4.5@160th : ISO 3200 : EV 0.0 : FE 24-105mm f/4 (55mm) I finally made it to London for a few weeks this summer, mainly to visit my mum who, like many, had been living in isolation for the past eighteen months. Found myself sitting on a bus behind this vision of love. Leant forward to ask if I could take a photo of the back of her head but she either ignored the weirdo or couldn’t […]
