100 for 100

To celebrate the centenary of Finland’s independence in 2017, I posted a Photo of the Day with a Finnish twist every day for 100 days leading up to the centenary year. Hopefully, my personal experiences of having lived here since 2002 will provide some insights to this place I call home.

Finland100: 68 – Order and Disorder

Sony A7RII : f/5.6@0.3sec : ISO 640 : EV -0.3 : FE 90mm f/2.8 A countdown of 100 images for the 100 days leading up to the 100th Year of Finland’s independence Here’s another shot of the Parliament building whilst it is closed for renovations. With the exterior covered up, the lights shining through the material at night make such a graphically strong backdrop that I just had to stop again. The organic chaos of the trees silhouetted against the straight lines […]

Finland 100: 67 – A Cloud at Sunset

Sony A7RII : f/6.3@80th : ISO 400 : EV -0.3 : FE 55mm f/1.8 A countdown of 100 images for the 100 days leading up to the 100th Year of Finland’s independence A beautiful, clear winter’s day here in Helsinki was calling out to me all day, tempting me to bunk off from my task in front of the computer selecting images from my latest shoot. I finally managed to get the selections done and off to the client as the last rays of […]

As the photo shows, there’s only two days to go before the kick-off for the official three day event […]

Finland 100: 65 – Crystal and the Limousine

Sony A7RII : f/16@50th : ISO 800 : EV -0.7 : FE 35mm f/2.8 A countdown of 100 images for the 100 days leading up to the 100th Year of Finland’s independence I pass this stretch limousine several times a week parked out on the street on my way to the office and then sometimes catch it cruising down Mannerheimintie on weekends. I’m not sure if there’s actually ever anyone inside having themselves a good time but it sure works as […]

The place opened a couple of years ago and has a lively scene going on during the long summer nights. It closes down for the winter but the […]

Finland 100: 63 – Finn on a Friday Night

Sony A7RII : f/4@100th : ISO 1250 : EV -0.3 : FE 90mm f/2.8 A countdown of 100 images for the 100 days leading up to the 100th Year of Finland’s independence It’s Friday night and Finn is centre stage, standing up loud and proud in the lights, right next to the KY. Throngs of people will be streaming into Kamppi on one form of public transport or another, ready to sample the neon delights. Who knows where the night will end. With a little help, […]

Finland 100: 62 – Asematunneli in the City Centre

Sony A7RII : f/5.6@60th : ISO 2000 : EV 0.0 : FE 35mm f/2.8 A countdown of 100 images for the 100 days leading up to the 100th Year of Finland’s independence Asematunneli translates as the ‘Station Tunnel’ and it pretty much does exactly what it says, providing pedestrians with an underground passageway from the railway station into the city centre. And, wherever you have a steady stream of humanity, you’ll find shops selling their wares. In fact, there’s a […]

Finland 100: 61 – Parliament by Night

Sony A7RII : f/9@4sec : ISO 125 : EV -1.0 : FE 90mm f/2.8 A countdown of 100 images for the 100 days leading up to the 100th Year of Finland’s independence The lights are on but there’s nobody in! The parliament building has been under renovation for months now, not sure for how much longer the work will be going on but, in the meantime, I’ll just enjoy the interesting new view. The lights under the scaffolding’s covers have […]
