PotD: The Day-Glo Cheshire Cat
Sony A7RII : f/8@100th : ISO 1600 : EV -0.3 : FE 35mm f/1.4
I came across this indoor funfair and the grinning Cheshire cat whilst strolling down Av. San Martín in Salta, Argentina. It was the middle of the day, the sun was beating down on my pale skin and I was thankful to find some temporary refuge. As my eyes adjusted to the dimly lit space, my senses were assaulted by the intensity of all that colour, the machines flashing away, each in synch to their own particular manic tune and the sound system adding that extra layer over the whole mix. This photo is relatively calm, in comparison.
Apart from the people working there, the place was empty, so I was able to take my time choosing how to best frame this sensory overload. I wanted to pack as much as I could into the frame and hold as much detail as possible. Handholding the 35mm lens with the Sony A7RII steadyShot system is okay at less than 1/100th but there is so much resolution packed into that sensor that I like to err on the side of caution. By shooting at 1600 ISO I kept the noise levels relatively clean; I don’t mind the quality of the noise that creeps in as you go higher but will try to avoid it whenever possible, with 6400 ISO the limit I try not to go beyond.
