A countdown of 100 images for the 100 days leading up to the 100th Year of Finland's independence
I was at my local Töölö health centre the other day so that they could carry on with the corrective work they’re doing on one of my children’s teeth, all part of the service included in the Finnish national health care, no extra charge. Afterwards, we did our usual trick of popping into the cafe on the centre’s ground floor to ruin the dentist’s hard work with some of the freshest sugary buttered buns in town. It will come as no surprise to Finns that all the lamps hanging in the cafe are designed by Alvar Aalto, like this Beehive lamp in the photo and several of his Golden Bell lamps just out of shot. The lamps were both first designed for use at the University of Jyväskylä and continued to be first choice in public institutions throughout Finland. Nothing like sitting next to design classics on a regular morning in Finland.
