Portraits from El Camino's End

After completing El Camino Portugues from Porto to Santiago de Compostela in October, 2023, my intention had been to continue onwards to Finisterre. Unfortunately, my feet decided otherwise and I found myself with the luxury of a few days off in a beautiful city. Whilst staying at the impressive Albergue Seminario Menor, it didn’t take long for me to realise that the constant stream of happy, exhausted faces arriving at the albergue would make for a great series of portraits. If a career as a professional photographer has taught me anything, it’s that any setback must be approached as an opportunity.

So, after seeking permission from the albergue, I positioned myself at the entrance, camera in hand, and waited. Within a few minutes, the first couple of pilgrims arrived. Even though it had been raining very heavily for days and they were desperate to get inside, sign in, and take off their heavy packs, they were more than happy for me to take their portrait. The same was true for the majority of people I approached. With speed being of the essence, I only took about 3-5 frames per person. All in all, I spent two hours a day over three days and ended up with 50 portraits, a ridiculousy quick result (and all shot with a 35mm lens, to let me get a little extra character through!). I could easily have done more but sometimes you have to acknowledge that there’s a time to stop and move on.

Big thanks to everyone who graciously gave of their time. If you recognise anyone, let them know that their photo is finally up. Apologies for the delay. Life got in the way!
